Fossil Hike at Calvert Cliffs

Join us for a 7 mile hike in Calvert Cliffs State Park in Maryland. We’ll start our hike sauntering through the forest looking for early signs of Spring, make our way through the wetlands, and arrive at the cliffs. We’ll stop to eat lunch, enjoy the sandy beach, and look for fossils before we make our way back across the ridge.

Calvert Cliffs were formed over 10 to 20 million years ago when all of Southern Maryland was covered by a warm, shallow sea. When the sea receded the cliffs were exposed and began eroding. Today these cliffs reveal the remains of prehistoric species Including sharks like Megalodons, whales, rays, and seabirds that were the size of small airplanes.

This is a great hike for anyone who’s looking to make the transition to longer day hikes.

Difficulty: Moderate; wide even trails with gentle climbs
Distance: ~ 7 miles total

Ascending Afghanistan: Women Rising (Film Screening and Live Q&A)

Join us as we screen the award winning VICE/HBO documentary, "Ascending Afghanistan: Women Rising" following the first female Afghan mountaineering team as they navigate their first expedition and fight for recognition as athletes. Afterwards, we'll be featuring a live talk back session with members of the team from Kabul and Marina LeGree, founder of Ascend, the non-profit that made their feat possible.

What: Film screening and Live Q&A: "Ascending Afghanistan: Women Rising"
When: February 9, 2019 @ 2:00-5:00pm
Where:
Barbara M. Donnellan Auditorium
Arlington Central Library
1015 N Quincy St · Arlington, VA

On August 6, 2015, a team of 13 young Afghan climbers set out to make history as the first women in the country to summit the Afghan mountain peak of Mir Samir. The team embarked on a 16-day-long expedition against the advice of their elders in an attempt to change the country’s narrative as one of the most dangerous places for women in the world. Doubling as a metaphor for the ascent of women in Afghanistan, the expedition often weathered the novice climbers’ motivation, but by the time they summited the nearly 17,000-foot peak, they’d climbed higher than any Afghan woman had before.

Ascend is a non-profit based in Virginia, who's mission is to develop young women into leaders through community service and the sport of mountain climbing.
